Liposuction of the hips: Get Ready

Be an informed and intelligent consumer by taking the time to make sure you are ready physically and emotionally for hip liposuction.  The American Association of Plastic Surgeons (AAPS) has suggested liposuction patients should take a number of physical examinations prior to surgery. The role of these exams is key in helping determine whether the patient is physically well enough health to have the procedure performed.  These exams can also aid in ruling out any pre-existing medical issues which could come into play and complicate the surgery.

You, the patient should discuss any health issues and not do not try and hide anything you may not feel is relevant. Let your physician decide this for you. This discussion should also include the use of prescriptions you are currently taking, store bought drugs (aspirin, laxatives, etc.) as well as alcohol and recreational drug use, if any.

On surgery day you will be given a gentle tranquilizer to calm your nerves prior to treatment.  Generally you are dressed in a loose fitting garment or robe. The performing surgeon will come into your room and outline the areas of your body which will be treated.  This is generally done with a Sharpie marking pen.  Once this is done you are wheeled into the procedure treatment room and given a local anesthesia.  Once the drugs stabilize the surgeon will make a small incision in the skin near the marker guidelines.

The cannula is prepped and readied for use while the vacuum pump is started.  The  hollow tube cannula is then inserted through your skin and into the fat tissue area and the process begins.  Depending on how much fluid is lost you may have an IV bag hooked to to prevent dehydration. Throughout the procedure, the patient’s oxygen levels, blood pressure and pulse (vitals) are carefully monitored.

It is highly recommended that you have someone drive you to and from the surgery center. Depending on the volume of fat removed and the location on your body where the treatment takes place, you may be able to leave within a few hours. Recovery time varies from individual to individual and this should be discussed before treatment so you will have a realistic timeframe of when you can return to work or normal activities.

Hip Liposuction Procedure: hospital or specialized cosmetic surgery center?

Congratulations, you have made the life changing decision to have Liposuction of your hips.  You may have already picked out your surgeon and place of treatment or may wonder which is preferable - hospital or specialized cosmetic surgery center. While the surgery center may seem like the best and easiest choice since this is their specialty.  Millions of procedures are performed in each setting. Here are some reasons why you may decide one method over another.

Advantages to Hospital Liposuction Procedure

  • Doctors on hospital staff are reviewed by the hospital board for competency
  • Hospitals maintain a large staff of competent and qualified nurses and assistants
  • Hospitals are better equipped to handle complications which may arise such as heart attack or chemical reaction

Disadvantages to Hospital Liposuction Procedure

  • A hospital stay is generally more costly than a procedure performed at a surgery center
  • Staff is generally trained in a variety of procedures (less specialization)
  • Less personalized service and willingness to make customized surgeries (multiple procedures performed at the same time).

Of course your outcome carries with it a certain amount of risk no matter which setting you chose.  Realize that no Liposuction procedure is ever 100% perfect.  You need to go into surgery with realistic expectations and you won’t come out disappointed.

The smoothest and most consistant liposuction results are usually obtained using ultrasound assisted liposuction.  Vaser Corporation based in the Netherlands has created what is considered a second-generation ultrasound device.

The VASER LipoSelection as it is known, combines new technology with advanced surgical techniques to break up and remove fatty tissue. This system claims to leave the surrounding tissue - such as nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue relatively intact. Bleeding and recovery time are minimized.

Because nerves and blood vessels are largely undisturbed, patients and physicians have reported low to minimal pain and bruising. In addition this system  allows physicians to work with such precision they can shape delicate areas like the inner thighs, arms, chin and neck.

If you are looking for a low-pain path to a slimmer, more youthful body, VASER LipoSelection could be the solution for you. Ask your liposuction center if they carry the VASER system.

Hip Liposuction Options

Why do some women have large hips?

It can be observed on certain women the natural broadening of the hip area is overly accentuated due to excessive fat deposits located in the hips.  Broad hips and thighs (aka saddle bags) can make finding well-fitting clothes particularly difficult.  In addition can be a source of anxiety and depression.

Hips which have been enlarged from excess fat can be revisioned into much better proportion by liposuction of the hip area. Not all patients require the same areas treated the same way.  Each patient is as unique as their surgery.

A smooth, and consistent removal from the subcutaneous deep layer is thought by some to provide the best results in hip liposuction.  If required, occasional superficial liposuction is performed on surrounding areas to tighten the skin and provide the most pleasing results.
