Liposuction of the hips: Get Ready

Be an informed and intelligent consumer by taking the time to make sure you are ready physically and emotionally for hip liposuction.  The American Association of Plastic Surgeons (AAPS) has suggested liposuction patients should take a number of physical examinations prior to surgery. The role of these exams is key in helping determine whether the patient is physically well enough health to have the procedure performed.  These exams can also aid in ruling out any pre-existing medical issues which could come into play and complicate the surgery.

You, the patient should discuss any health issues and not do not try and hide anything you may not feel is relevant. Let your physician decide this for you. This discussion should also include the use of prescriptions you are currently taking, store bought drugs (aspirin, laxatives, etc.) as well as alcohol and recreational drug use, if any.

On surgery day you will be given a gentle tranquilizer to calm your nerves prior to treatment.  Generally you are dressed in a loose fitting garment or robe. The performing surgeon will come into your room and outline the areas of your body which will be treated.  This is generally done with a Sharpie marking pen.  Once this is done you are wheeled into the procedure treatment room and given a local anesthesia.  Once the drugs stabilize the surgeon will make a small incision in the skin near the marker guidelines.

The cannula is prepped and readied for use while the vacuum pump is started.  The  hollow tube cannula is then inserted through your skin and into the fat tissue area and the process begins.  Depending on how much fluid is lost you may have an IV bag hooked to to prevent dehydration. Throughout the procedure, the patient’s oxygen levels, blood pressure and pulse (vitals) are carefully monitored.

It is highly recommended that you have someone drive you to and from the surgery center. Depending on the volume of fat removed and the location on your body where the treatment takes place, you may be able to leave within a few hours. Recovery time varies from individual to individual and this should be discussed before treatment so you will have a realistic timeframe of when you can return to work or normal activities.
